Some police agencies do. Some police agencies don’t.
And According to one Mid State Police chief, there is no law that mandates it gets done.
We’re talking about redacting private, sensitive information on police reports that any citizen can obtain.
The question is what information is necessary as part of the public document and what sensitive information, like social security numbers and driver’s license numbers should be kept private to help minimize incidents of identity theft.
When Connie Douglas and her sister got into a physical altercation at a Rutherford County Hospital, Smyrna police responded and made out an incident report.
“So I went to get a copy of the police report, and this is what I found,” Connie Douglas says with a glare in her eye.
The grandmother is holding her police report and pointing to the box where her social security number and name and date of birth are all prominently displayed.
“I don’t think that anyone should have access to my social security number except me.”
Douglas says she obtained her police report by going to Smyrna P.D. and paying 7 dollars. Not only was Douglas’ private information available, but so to was the private data of her sister, the person she claims allegedly assaulted her.
“So you are an alleged victim of assault, and police come and you feel like you were assaulted again by the police dept because they put in all your private info, is that true?”
The senior shakes her head emphatically.
“I thought it was private. I thought they were there to protect me, and it feels like to me they don’t protect me when they give my info out to anyone who wants it.”

Today’s email demonstrates how widspread the theft of the baby Jesus from nativity scenes is. You remember our report on Franklin’s baby Jesus theft yesterday. Now comes one from another Franklin church.
On 12/18/08, a member from the United Methodist Church of College Grove reported that a figurine of The Baby Jesus that had been in the Nativity Scene on display at the church was stolen. The theft is believed to have occurred between November 30, 2008 and December 18, 2008.The Baby Jesus had been part of the Nativity Scene at the church since 1981. The figurine is described as having out stretched arms with a halo above its head.
The church is located at 8568 Horton Hwy College Grove Phone number 368-2191

What kind of person steals a baby Jesus from the front yard of a church?
The same person who would wear an iron suit in a thunder storm. The same person who cleans a lion’s teeth with meat flavored gloves. The same person who jumps out of airplanes with dumbbells strapped to their arms. Obviously a person with no concern for Karma or what’s right and wrong.
That person, or persons, is out there, and they will have to live with themselves after trespassing onto the front lawn of the first United Methodist Church in Franklin.
It is here that the Christmas criminals stepped into the Nativity display and stole Baby Jesus in the manager.
Connie Turvy has been a member of the church just off of Five Points in Franklin for the better part of four decades.
“This is the nativity scene my mother bought for the church,” she tells me on a blustery, but abnormally warm winter day.
“We’ve been looking for about ten years and she finally found the one she liked last year.”
I look at the display. The figurines are looking down at the empty traces of hay in the grass..
“What kind of person steals baby Jesus from a nativity scene?” I ask her aloud.
Turvy guesstimates Baby Jesus was stolen Saturday Dec. 13th.
“How does it make you feel, ma’am?”
“Very sad. Very disappointed,” she says.
According to Turvy, a growing number of churches are putting GPS tracking devices in their displays.
I am surprised to hear this.
“What has the world come to when I have to put a GPS in a Baby Jesus?”
“It is sad,” she says staring at the bare patch in the grass. “It is sad!”
Turvy tells me that the Church just wants Baby Jesus back. She says if the figurine returns, no questions will be asked. no charges will be filed.
DATE LINE: WEST WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND: February 21st 2003.
Hair metal band, Great White is on stage. Hundreds of people are inside the The Station night club.
According to published reports; the band is cranking out its first song when pyrotechnics begin going off.
That’s when foam that had been placed around the stage as soundproofing quickly ignited.
“Thick smoke quickly spread through the club and within minutes, the one-story, wooden building was engulfed in flames, trapping club goers as they rushed toward the same exit.” 100 people died.
Great White guitarist, Ty Longley, was among those killed the fire. Dozens more were injured.
The club owners were charged with 200 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
“In the wake of the fire, Gov. Don Carcieri called for emergency inspections of all public buildings similar to The Station nightclub, and the state formed a commission to investigate the blaze. State lawmakers passed stringent new fire-safety standards, including stricter rules on sprinkler requirements for older buildings.” Because of what many call the nations “deadliest nightclub fires”
Laws are changing here in Tennessee mandating that live music venues with occupancies of 100 or more must install fire sprinkler systems.
Metro Fire Marshal Danny Hunt says it is a direct result of the Rhode Island tragedy and it is all about safety.
“The national fire protection association put in a mandate that required the retrofitting of sprinklers for night clubs that serve drinks and have live entertainment and if you had occupancy over 100.”
“It requires a night club, a dance hall, a disco, anything that mixes drinking, alcohol with excitement, 43 the high intensity and the vibe they (the crowd” gets, with loud music, that is distracting, and they are so focused, like a concert, you go in, loud music, and all the people’s attentions are totally on the group, and you could have fires, that happen, and people will ignore it, they cannot hear things going on, so there are requirements in the code to take care of that.”
Hunt admits that the new code will be costly to all the establishments that it affects.
“It gets expensive when you have to bring it (water) in from the street. I think the major cost is getting the water from the water main into the building. The residual costs are the sprinkler lines in the building.”
Hunt says the city has been very lenient on club owners who have appealed, almost automatically granting them 18 month extensions to comply.
That time is running out for some clubs, like the world famous Exit In.
Since 1971, live music has poured off this stage at this concrete slab of peeling paint and stale beer stench.
The walls are tatooed with history of the bands that have rocked across the stage.
The Guess Who, the Ramones, Muddy Waters, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Fabulous thunderbirds, Wolf Mother, Fats Domino, REM, Billy Joel, the Black Crowes, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
The list goes on and on and on.
Josh Billue is the latest owner of the venerable rock and roll hall.
“I am 27 years old and I own the biz it is very scary to be facing bankruptcy at 27″
Billue doesn’t own the building - but he does own the business
“I am not against the sprinklers, I am for them. And if they were handing them out for free I am all about it.”
Today’s email of the day was actually a video sent to us simply saying drunk drivers are messed up! Watch it and enjoy, and remember. Call a cab! Don’t drive drunk.
How many cars parked at a house are too many cars?
How many people in one residence are too many?
At what point does the quality of your life suffer because of your neighbor’s actions?
Charlie Moseley is a retired Metro Police officer and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The 75 year old has lived on Harold Drive for more than 20 years.
Moseley says he doesn’t even feel welcome because of the house across the street.
“I see heavy traffic and fast driving. There are a lot of people in the driveway. There is loud music night and day. There is a constant shuffling of cars.”
On the day we visit, garbage is over flowing from the can. We find 3 vehicles parked in the front of the home, 2 of which are straddling a drainage ditch.
In addition, there are 5 cars parked in the driveway and 2 utility trailers wedged against the garage. There is debris everywhere, on the driveway and in the grass. Oddly, the garage door is stuffed with blankets and what appears to be clothing.
A woman at the home meets me at the bottom of the driveway. Her English is choppy, but she gets her points across to me in a passionate way.
“Who tells this to you,” she says trying to push the camera lens away. “This guy complains about everything,” she says pointing to Mr. Moseley’s home across the street.
Wrapped in a yellow blanket, the woman defends her family telling me that the people who live here work hard for a living and do not cause problems.
“Everyone works, every day. I am not drinking beer, no problems,” she says waving her hands.
“Everyone works! Everyone works. Only these people, cause they live across the street, this neighbor, this cop, every time he complains. He is an old man.”
Today’s Messed Up email of the day is an All Point Bulletin. Messed Up rarely does this, but we need your help to find a person who allegedly drove off from an accident. Have you seen this car? Is it someone you know?
Last night at 9:48pm I was heading home after Christmas shopping at Opry Mills. Right at the 440 W/West End exit I was re-ended while at the redlight waiting to turn onto West End…this caused me to run into another car. That’s messed up, isn’t it?
I was hit really hard by a Dark Hunter Green VW 80’s-90’s Jetta. His car has MAJOR damage to the front, he stopped asked all involved if they were okay and went to get his insurance it looked like. He kept saying “I’m sorry” He drove off, it was impossible to follow him because my car was TOTALED!
Have you seen this man? He was around his late 20’s or early 30’s 5′7ish Dark hair, fair complexion wearing round glasses
Have you seen this car? Hunter Green VW Jetta with Florida Tags, When he drove off he was heading towards downtown off of the 440 exit, have no idea where he went to…his car was SMOKING and leaking the whole front of the car was smashed the police have some of his tag number but any help would be appreciated. There was a car in front of me so if you have any information please help!
It’s almost Christmas and I can’t believe someone would have the heart to do this!
The accident happened at 9:48pm December 16th, and I’m sure someone has seen this car around town, or knows who it is. We spent the entire rest of the night in the ER!
How can people sleep at night knowing they did something like this? It’s almost Christmas and now my car is totaled, I have major back pain and the person who caused it just drove away! THAT’S SO MESSED UP!
Today’s email of the day comes from a woman who is mad that the military mail service doesn’t run as often as it should in Afghanistan to deliver our troops a taste of home.
My nephew is just one of many serving this country. His unit stuck in some hole of a mountain in Afghanistan has received no mail for over 2 weeks and have been told they problably won’t get any until Christmas. We send almost daily.
How are these young people serving so we can live like we do supposed to know we support them. We send boxes with wool hats to help them stay warm, snacks, mittens. We have entrusted that the fat government will care for our loved ones while they are risking their lives and this is what they get!!!
I want to know why and when will it be fixed. How would you or these fat politicians like to be stuck where they are!!! Their pay is approx $2.10/hr!! and we expect them, all voluntarily serving their country to fight and win when they are cold, have to defacate in paper bags, go with little or no sleep, and now no communication from home. We should not and cannot allow this. What can you do? How can we support our government with all the planning and strategists and they can’t get mail and supplies to the troops. I’m only talking about one unit of marines. How many others are there in the same boat.
